Get out in the sun!

Spring is here!
Now it's time to get back out in the sun!

This winter has been different than others because it has been a lot colder.  So spending time outdoors has not sounded very fun to me at all. But now that the weather is warming up I can feel a pull to get outside. Are you feeling it too?

Many people are afraid of the sun and try to limit their exposure to it, but God knew what our bodies would need and provided it for us.

Laying out in the sun for long periods of time getting baked probably isn't the best thing to do. I am not the type of person that enjoys laying out in the sun but I can still get benefits. I like to work outside in the yard or garden, go for a walk, or read a book outside.

Depending on your skin type, you may needs as little as 5-15 minutes on your hands, arms and face 2-3 times per week according to the World Health Organization. That seems doable to me!

Here are some health benefits from the sun's rays:

1. Helps the body produce Vitamin D
2. Gives a natural mood boost
3. Reduces Seasonal Affective Disorder
4. It's good for your bones and teeth
5. Supports brain, immune and nervous system
6. Helps regulate insulin levels
7. Supports cardiovascular health
8. Reduces risk of depression

This month make an extra effort to get out in the sun more and enjoy the benefits of Vitamin D.

Reducing inflammation

March is my most favorite month of the year! I love that things start to come alive - birds are singing, flowers are blooming, the grass is growing (well, at least that is how I remember March up in the Valley ;) Just two weeks ago we had snow but, I walked outside yesterday to find blooms on our fruit trees!

Spring just feels like a fresh start. Spring cleaning will be in full swing at our home next week when the kids have Spring Break (we like to call it Spring Work 😂😉). And with all of this spring cleaning going on it's also a great time to do some spring cleaning of another kind.

We've had months of cold temperatures and months of celebrating and now it's time to clean up!

This month I'm going to focus on inflammation.

Do you know what causes inflammation?

Diet, lack of exercise, and too much stress are certainly contributing.

So what can we do?

Well, it depends on the kind of person you are. If you are an all-or-nothing kind of person you can tackle some or most of these things in one swoop. Or, you can ease yourself into it by making small changes and build on those. I think this is the category where most of us fit into.

This month, pick one area - diet, exercise or stress - and do some spring cleaning.

If you want to clean up your diet,
here are the most common foods that cause inflammation:

White bread
Dairy
Fried foods
Sugar
Soda
Deli meat/bacon
Donuts
Processed foods
Alcohol

Just pick one of these foods and cut them out for the rest of the month.

If you choose to exercise, is it time to roll out the yoga mat, take a swim, lace up your shoelaces? The whole point here is to MOVE! Just get started. Don't worry about doing the right thing or even doing it perfectly. Your body will thank you for getting it moving!

And if you want to tackle stress what should you do?
Or maybe it's a question of what you shouldn't be doing!

First, I take a look at all of the things that I am doing - writing a list really helps.

Then, I look at my list and start crossing things off that I don't really need to do.

Next, I look at my list and see what things I should be doing - but only the things that would contribute to my well-being. Maybe it's taking a walk outside, taking a hot bath, reading a book, or playing with my kids. Warning: You should NOT add more to-dos to this list. I remind myself often to not should on myself 😂.

Are you with me?

What area are you going to work on this month?
